i got back from the road trip with dom and clementine two days before christmas. through snow, rain, cold and wind we persevered. along with boatloads of pictures, we lit off fireworks (and other explosives), managed to eat at only one chain restaurant, procured some of the finest american paraphernalia and met some wonderful americans.

recommendations include:

it's 4 am, and the stars are bright in kansas.

we lit out from bozeman late afternoon on thursday the 15th. clementine had a new battery for the cold we'd be hitting, and we swapped the rear end over to a set of studded tires. rosanna, clementine's previous owner, took us out for a night on the town the night before. i liked bozeman. i think i'll be back for several reasons.

we headed straight for yellowstone - the boiling river, to be more precise. clementine rode out of town smooth as could be. it was to be her first trip out of montana.

so far we've been to the badlands, devil's tower, boulder, denver and careened down countless gorgeous back country stretches for miles. these road trips in america feel fresh every time. now on to the high plains of kansas. -j.r.m.

i got an email a few weeks back from Justin Appenzeller, photo editor at outdoor life magazine. his art director had passed on a promo i sent to him last winter that had some ice fishing images on it. i must have sent that out at least a year ago.

i sent in a small portfolio of images probably almost 3 years ago now. it was black and white work (that's all the sun publishes) from very early on. most of the work was probably from the first twenty rolls of film i'd ever shot. they accepted some and i never thought they'd see the light of day. then, a couple weeks ago i got a package with several copies, a wonderful letter, a check, and a free years subscription.

it's a wonderful magazine with a really refreshing aim (it's ad-free). it was a very important magazine for me at one time in my life in ways i can't really describe. a time in my life i've been having many feelings about recently. i can't wait to dive back in. thanks to you, the sun.

i heard a radio piece today on the last working kodachrome processing machine that's slated to stop production today. there's a full article on it here via the ny times. the word is that one fellow dropped off some 1,500 rolls to dwayne's photo.

i never shot the stuff myself. but it was obviously very instrumental in bringing color photographs to the world. the word is that it's all about the reds and yellows with kodachrome. and i was fascinated to hear that it was essentially a black and white film and that its color content is added during processing.

perhaps the most famous kodachrome image here.

oh, and that last roll to ever be processed - dwayne gets it.

with an email announcing the iphone 4 being dropped in my inbox less than 48 hours ago, i found it noteworthy to make a quick post on just how helpful technology can be to my business. and if you haven't seen the video for the iphone 4, take a few minutes - no doubt you'll be seeing tons of people walking around having live video chats very soon after they drop this thing. really cool.

so yesterday i got a call from a client and, the short story is, they needed files but i'm on location. uh-oh. unfortunately i'm a one-man show. there's no full time assistant, no office manager - i'm just not at the point in my business. basically, i carry open jobs around with me on a lacie rugged drive and work on stuff on my laptop as need be.

ironically, only last week i was considering doing something about this given that i've had some requests for stock while on location. it seems as though apple's remote desktop 3 could be a great solution that provides access to my office computer and drives while i'm on location. i'm not totally up to speed on how to set it up, secure it, use it - i'm not even completely positive it's my solution. but if it's software that i can setup in my office machine that allows me to gain access to that machine and the drobo attached to it, it just might have to be invested in.

so, my client still needs these files. i had to get someone to go into the office and upload these images for me and walking anyone that doesn't know my system of compressing my 16-bit files in photoshop, making folders the proper size, uploading them to the site... all this is not easy to walk someone through blindly. so what did we do? we skyped.

skype is free (for certain uses) and skype is awesome. i actually use their services for my office phone. and lucky me, along with lots of other uses, they have this really handy tool that allows you to share your screen with the person on the other end. alas, i could see everything that the person on the other end uploading my files was doing. i could point them in the right direction whenever i saw their mouse hovering over something it wasn't supposed to. it was genius. i literally sat in bed in my hotel with my laptop and walked someone through the whole process.

so if you're not heading out to grab that new iphone but still want to video chat with some folks, get hip to skype. it's free, you can video chat with other people using just your internet connection, and if you want to actually call cell phones and land lines, their services are super cheap.

a couple weeks ago i finally ordered Dan Winters first monograph Periodical Photographs. priced at under thirty-five bucks, it's something to have in any portrait shooters collection. actually, forget the price. you need this book. each photograph exudes technical efficiency and elegant portraits that are just magically human.

there's this story that i'd heard where dan simply turns in one 11x14 print for all his editorial work. no editing for his clients, no website of selects, just a perfect print of what he deems to be the best portrait. i suppose that's one way of keeping your work consistent. i've had my share of "i can't believe they ran that" moments when seeing images in print. all the while knowing i had stronger images within my delivery of selects.

nice job, mr. winters. nice.

i really wanted to make it to your book signing a couple years back. just a couple words. maybe one story. one answer to one question. i tried to give someone my copy of 'not fade away' to get it in front of your pen since i couldn't make it. didn't work out, though. i'm sure it was something to do with school. i'm sure i'd have still graduated - so how about a swift one to the ass for me.

got back from a personal project in the adirondacks about a week ago and had to shoot straight up north to assist on 6 days worth of catalogue work. dom and i spent 3 days in NY shooting a canoe race that we're planning on pitching to some of the outdoor magazines. lots of editing to do and lots of post to do - all while slammed with assisting jobs here in boston and a lot of catalogue work in new hampshire. i have quite a few things on my to-do list.

today i opened up my notes from my second lecture of my very first class at photo school. i'm getting started on developing the black and white film i've been collecting for basically 2 years now. i just mixed up a batch of developer and boy did it feel good. i forgot my process for mixing it and the notes definitely paid off.

i really miss this part of photography. when i first fell in love with it absolutely adored the chemistry/art mix. now it's computer science/art. i enjoy the computer part, too, it's just different. i can still do my thing and develop my film and shoot my film cameras and make my contact sheets which i'm very grateful for. i'm pretty lucky to be right in the middle of this transition period and have lots of knowledge of both.

my friend dom is about to go to photo school and i wonder if he'll ever learn how to mix developer. will he only be learning about masks and how to carve out pen paths and how to use c1?

i heart new jersey.

i recently had a week of vacation in new jersey. a strange place to go on vacation, i know. even those of us outside new york think bad thoughts when anyone says "jersey" and is referring to a place. it was this notion that i wanted to put behind some pictures.

when people asked why i was taking the pictures that i was, my simplest answer was that i wanted to take 'bad' pictures. i thought it was an interesting concept. 'bad' may not have necessarily been the proper term to use but it worked nonetheless. it worked given the conception of what beauty is when typically referring to photographs. i wanted to use hard light, shoot boring things, document my trip, try some new things with color and contrast in post-production, catch really un-flattering images of people, etc. i wanted to put that feeling most people have about new jersey into the pictures.

it was surprisingly hard. since i started shooting i've unconsciously worked toward my own aesthetic. and here it was something i tried to break myself free of. it took more consciousness and thought than i put into taking what i consider my produced personal work. that stuff comes naturally and this was something totally new i was trying.

though i couldn't seem to keep it going the whole time, i definitely got some winners.

i went to narragansett, ri saturday night to catch an early morning surf session on the predicted hurricane bill swell. it was pretty wild.

along the south side sea wall there's this drain that goes straight down and out into the ocean on the side of the sea wall. when sets were coming in just right it would spew seawater up from the grate. unsuspecting passers-by got drenched. i had a good time trying to catch some of them.
